Early orthodontic evaluations allow orthodontists to monitor jaw development and guide tooth eruption while a child is still growing. Known as Phase 1 treatment, this approach may create space for permanent teeth and reduce the complexity of future orthodontic care.
As a parent, you want to give your child every advantage, and a confident, healthy smile is high on that list. If you’ve started noticing gaps, crowding, or misaligned bites while your child is still losing baby teeth, you might be wondering: Is it too early to see an orthodontist, and at what age do kids get braces?
Actually, it might be the perfect time! At Jackson Orthodontics, we provide early orthodontic treatment in Charlotte, NC, and Fort Mill, SC, to set the stage for a lifetime of healthy, straight smiles.
Dr. Jackson, our trusted orthodontist in Steele Creek, Charlotte, and Fort Mill, SC, likes to think of a great smile like building a house: it’s much easier to get the foundation right early on than it is to move the walls later! This early intervention is known as Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment.
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment (sometimes called interceptive orthodontics or Phase 1 braces) occurs while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Instead of focusing on perfect alignment immediately, the goal is to guide jaw development, create space for emerging teeth, and prevent more complex dental issues later.
So, when should kids get braces or early orthodontic appliances? Early intervention typically starts between ages 6 and 9. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7.
By this age, the first permanent molars have usually erupted. This allows us to evaluate how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other and identify developing concerns such as:
By identifying these issues early, Dr. Jackson can guide your child’s developing teeth and jaws with appliances, such as expanders, space maintainers, or braces, preventing more complex dental problems later in life.
Not every child needs early intervention. However, your child may be ready for Phase 1 braces or appliances if you notice the following signs:
If you notice any of these, don’t worry! It doesn’t always mean your child needs braces immediately, but it is a great time to start a conversation with an expert like Dr. Jackson.
You might be wondering, “If they’re going to need braces as a teenager anyway (Phase 2), why start now?” The answer lies in efficiency. When we guide your child’s jaw growth during Phase 1, we’re essentially “prepping the canvas.”
Early treatment can:
We know that a visit to the orthodontist can feel a little intimidating for a seven-year-old, which is why we keep things fun, light, and educational! During your Phase 1 consultation at Jackson Orthodontics, our primary goal is to get a clear “map” of your child’s dental development.
We’ll take some digital photos and X-rays (where necessary) to see what’s happening beneath the gum line. Dr. Jackson will review the findings with you and discuss whether your child needs treatment now or is a better fit for our “Observation Club,” where we monitor their growth every six months. If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain the “why” and “how” in a way that makes you and your child feel confident and excited.
Starting orthodontic care early doesn’t mean rushing into braces; it means giving your child the best possible foundation for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
